You don’t have to adopt to help a child. You just have to care.
Children who don’t currently have the support of their parents need someone else to look out for their needs. Once they are in the state-run foster-care system, they can begin to feel tossed about and disconnected. Months of uncertainty places stress upon their young lives. They worry about their parents. They worry about their siblings. They worry about their future. Since they often don’t have the support of a family, they need champions. These champions are called Child Advocates.
Being a Child Advocate is one of the highest callings you can have.
It shows a child that someone cares for them. It forever alters the scope and direction of a young life. It brings you fulfillment in the knowledge that you can keep a child from the harm that can be brought on from too much “bouncing around” in the system.
Becoming a Child Advocate isn’t easy.
In Missouri, becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) requires special background checks, some training, and a lot of paperwork. But these are small sacrifices to pay for the feeling you’ll get when you know you have done a good job. Though not every child advocate is compensated, many receive a small stipend to cover travel expenses.
