Just for Parents
Being a parent is the most important job an adult can undertake.

Yet, sometimes we all need a little guidance, or just talking with someone else can help.

That’s why our board and staff have asked us to create a special place where parents can find tips or advice – or share accomplishments and methods that are successful for you in helping you children grow up right.

What Should a "Just For Parents" Website Look Like? PDF Print E-mail

What would you like to find here?

Our hope is that this "Just For Parents" site might offer parenting tips, timely advocacy news, methods that work for other parents, methods that didn't work for you, other resources that you found helpful.  Yet most of all, our hope is that this site is one where you will come often to find resources and tips about raising healthy, safe, responsible children.

What would you like to find here?

Would you tell us what would be helpful to you ?   We'll do our best to make this site the best parent resource on the World Wide Web.

Connecting with your Teen PDF Print E-mail

Many teens spend less time with their families then they did as younger children. As they become more independent and learn to think for themselves, relationships with friends become very important. Sometimes it may feel like your teen doesn't need you anymore -- but teens still need their parents' love, support, and guidance.

Tips to keep in mind:

  • Have family meals - if not every night, schedule a regular weekly family dinner night that accommodates your child's schedule.
  • Share "ordinary" time. Even times spent driving or working the dog together offer chances for your teen to talk about what going on.
  • Set clear limits. Teens still need our guidance - feeling alone/feeling in charge are scary thoughts for young people growing in independence. Involve your teen in setting rules and consequences - yet choose your battles. Try to provide choices in the matters that are less important.

Your words and actions help your teen feel secure. Don't forget to say and show how much you love your teenager!  - Learn more at www.childwelfare.gov/ preventing.
